Polk Street

Written by T. Chase MeachamPolk Street is an original play that adapts Joey Plaster’s 2012 NPR segment “Polk Street Stories.” The story explores the changing lives of San Francisco’s Polk Street residents during a time of growing gentrification as well as marginalization of the neighborhood’s longstanding queer community. Polk Street made its debut in 2013 at Georgetown University in a co-production by student theater groups Mask & Bauble Dramatic Society and nomadictheatre. The play continued to evolve through a staged reading at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ 2013 Page-to-Stage Festival and subsequent revisions as part of Meacham’s senior thesis project at Georgetown University.

“I promised you I’d watch you play. I heard you’re so good, I hear you’re so pretty when you dance, hear you just fly and fly like a moth on a bulb, like a fish, like a bird, pretty pretty—” (Eddie, Polk Street)
